Most of the time, there are obvious signs that something has gone wrong with your water heater. One common is rust colored water, usually this only requires a replacement part. Sometimes the appliance will make a high pitched noise or even a rumble indicating a leak or a valve that isn’t functioning. An unmistakable sign that your water heater has gone bad is not having hot water or hot enough water.
More subtle indications of a problem could be a rotten egg smell that you have trouble locating and is more pronounced when the water is running. A leak may only drip a little water at a time and you may not realize there is an issue immediately if the water heater is still producing hot water, especially if it is in a basement or utility closet that is infrequently visited. We suggest that you periodically examine your water heater for leaks, rust or condensation.
Another important thing to keep in mind, if you have a gas water heater, is to keep your nose to the air for gas leaks. Again, a rotten egg or garlicky smell will warn you of the problem. If you do smell gas, turn off the gas supply to the heater and call us and your gas company immediately.
