After a meal one of the least favorite chores is usually dealing with the dishes, especially when the meal was not that popular and there are plenty of leftovers from the plates. There are a number of ways to deal with this, but the most usual way is to just throw it into the garbage disposal. However, there are reasons for installing a garbage disposal beyond just getting rid of leftover food.

Although the most obvious reason is merely to get rid of any leftovers, a garbage disposal can help with other tasks as well. One task is cleaning out the refrigerator in assisting getting rid of “science experiments”, those dishes that have been there for long enough to spoil and become moldy. They can be dumped into the disposal and eliminated. Not only is there no mess left over but it does not stink up the garbage. As long as the disposal is cleaned regularly there should not be an issue.

They can also be used to help compost fertilizer for the garden or other plants. Some garbage disposals can be used to grind up foods thrown into the disposal unit and then store those materials rather than wash them down the drain as they would normally. Those remains can then be collected and dispersed in the garden as desired. This allows a wide variety of materials that would otherwise be hard for the pile to decompose with any speed; breaking it down in the disposal helps to speed decomposition. This also means that the compost will be ready sooner than usually expected.

The garbage disposal unit can be used for more than merely eliminating leftovers. It helps to remember to remember to maintain the disposal unit ever so often, usually through some simple vinegar followed by lemon to eliminate any smells. Of course, this adds yet another utility to the disposal unit: It can be added to someone’s chore roster in hopes of teaching someone about responsibility. This makes the garbage disposal unit an extremely important part of the household, simplifying a number of different chores and making life easier, as it was meant to do.
