How To Handle a Plumbing Emergency

Tacoma PlumberThe first and most important thing to do during a plumbing emergency is to turn off all water to the area of operation. The easiest way to do this is to follow the pipeline until a small valve is seen. These are often behind toilets or inside the drawers underneath sinks. Once located, turning the valve should shut off all water to the appliance. The second most important thing is to clean up the damage. If water is still leaking, seal the leak, or find something to catch the water. Clean up any water or substances on the floor to prevent house damage, and place towels around the area to catch any water that may continue falling.

Next is to analyze the situation, and determine if it is within your capability. If it's a clogged toilet, it's probably not worth making a fuss over. But if a pipe is broken in the sink, it may be time to call in a professional. It's best to start by turning off all water, calling a plumber if it is deemed necessary, and then focusing on cleanup while the plumber is on the way.

If the problem is related to a water heater, turn off the heat to that heater. There is often a gas valve near the heater, and drain the heater with a hose. In the case of a clog, try plunging the clog, or snaking it if the drain is too small for a plunger.

Finally, make sure to take preventative measures and ensure that you won't experience another plumbing emergency. Ask the present plumber or another expert what steps should be taken to avoid the issue you experienced. If a pipe is leaking, repair it. If it's rusted, replace it. Nothing is more unfortunate than coming home to several thousand dollars in water damage.
