Are you prepared for a plumbing emergency?

24 Hour Emergency PlumberObviously, any plumbing issue, especially a plumbing emergency, needs to be handled by a professional, but if you need relief immediately, here are some tips to help you through.

The first thing to do in a plumbing emergency is to stop any water that is still coming in to the house. You will need to locate the water main and turn it off. This is usually found in cellar or basement or outside next to the home - depending on your area and home construction. Once you've found it, turn it off to prevent the issue from getting worse.

Next, you will want to turn off any water valves in the room where the emergency is taking place. Turn off both hot and cold valves to sinks, and water lines to washers, bathtubs, toilets, or any other water-using appliance.

When you are positive no more water is going through the damaged pipe(s), you will want to deal with the water that is probably already in your home. Buckets and towels are you best bet for removing the water. You want to get as much of it up as possible to prevent mold, carpet or floor damage, or slipping and falling.

If the incident has occurred after regular business hours, you may want to contact a 24-hour plumber and request service. Some homeowners find that once the initial "flood" problem is dealt with, they can wait until the next day to call a plumber. This is a decision up to you, but be sure that waiting will not result in a bigger problem or more damage, as that could become expensive to deal with.

Finally, one of the best solutions is prevention. It's a good idea to have a professional assess your plumbing and let you know if there are any obvious "weak spots." These can potentially lead to emergencies that are much more difficult to deal with than simple upkeep. Never try to DIY fix a plumbing problem, as that usually results in a weak solution that will also lead to a big problem later on.
