Signs Your Water Heater Is In Need of Repairs
Hot water heaters are appliances that can last for a long time; sometimes lasting for years. So, what do you look for when it's on its last leg or when it needs repairs? What are the symptoms you look for when you need to repair or when it's time to replace your water heater?
Is your Water Cold? If you go in expecting to take a hot bath and the water is ice cold, chances are your hot water needs repairs or may need to be replaced. The heating element could be broken but this part is easy to replace. On the other hand, if your hot water isn't lasting as long as it used to you may need repairs or replacement.
Is there a puddle or puddles? Look for puddles or standing water around your heater's tank. Also, look for a stream of water coming from the tank to a floor drain.
How old is your tank? Most hot water heaters will last for 5 to 10 years; so if you've had yours for at least this long, you may need repairs or replacement. If you've had it for a bit longer than the warranty's expiration and you notice any of these symptoms you probably need to replace it.
Listen to it: Listen to your hot water heater. If you start to hear noises that you haven't heard before such as loud pops, cracks, clanging noises, creaks or whines, there is probably a mechanical problem. You will most likely need a replacement tank.
How does your water smell? If your water smells odd when you turn it on this could be bacteria within the water. You will need a plumber to wash this out and sanitize your water heater
