Signs Your Home Needs to be Repiped
Over the course of time, the drainage system in your home will become damaged due to wear and tear. When equipped with the knowledge of what to look for, you will be able to tell if the plumbing system in your home needs to be repiped. There are several signs that will point you in the direction of pipe replacement.
The most recognizable sign of faulty plumbing is water leaks. Some water leaks can be caused by loose threading on a pipe and would be in one area. But if you start noticing water leaks in various areas, you may have a problem. You will need to have your plumbing checked for leaky pipes. If left unattended, leaks can damage the structure of a home.
Another sign of pipe deterioration is rusty colored water. An old pipe system may have corroded and began to rust. This rusty material flakes off into the water flow causing a rusty mix of water. You may also see flakes in your water that are washing out from the pipes. This will affect the quality of your water, making it unsafe to drink.
Also, as the pipes become aged, deposits and scale build up and can block the pipes. This in turn will cause a low water pressure in your home. If you notice a drop in your water flow and volume, it may be time to replace your home's water pipes. In addition to the low water pressure, the buildup of deposits on the pipes will cause inconsistent water temperatures. You may notice that the water is very slow in warming up or it may suddenly spike from hot to cold.
Many houses that are 20 years or older and have never had the pipes replaced are probably good candidates for repiping. In years past, the pipes were not made out of the quality of materials that are available today. The older pipes degenerated faster causing the interior of the pipes to begin flaking off, this piping system is not safe by the standards of today and should be replaced in older homes.
